Roof terrace to roof garden.

We moved into our current home in The Factory in 2013. The entire apartment was looking a sorry-sorry state, in particular the decking was unloved and untreated. Despite annual staining, after only a couple of months, it was looking tired again.

Ever since I saw the 2011 film Shame, I fell in love with the The Standard hotel, featured in the film. I loved the interiors, the view of the High Line and Hudson River and its location in the Meatpacking District. Most of all I loved Le Bain, their rooftop bar, complete with artificial grass.

So, once we were ready, the decision to install artificial grass was relatively straightforward, we just needed to find the right company. Swish Lawns are based in Essex and they came to measure up and talk me through our options. Tom, the owner, was from the same town as me! Grays. And he totally ‘got me’ and understood our needs. After looking through the options, we chose a low profile pile.

Their grass comes with a 7 year warranty, is fire retardant and UV protected, so it won’t fade in the sun. The grass was made in Holland and no toxic substances were used. It’s safe for animals and, of course, children.

Because the grass was being fixed to decking, super spongy underlay with drainage holes was fitted. And, the best bit, there’s no maintenance needed – aside of brushing it with a stiff brush from time to time to raise the pile. Perfect for the time poor.

I’m so pleased with the results, I think it’s fair to say this is definitely a roof garden now. I can’t wait to hold our annual Nor-Folk barbecue before the summer is out. You can see last year’s gathering in the video below.
